During the late ‘60’s the “muscle car war” was heating up with a plethora of big block engines that were being stuffed into mid-size cars. Chevrolet’s answer was the Chevelle SS 396. A de-stroked version of the legendary 409, this powerhouse came with 375 bhp and 415 foot pounds of torque. Although not the fastest car of the era the Chevelle became one of the most popular with some 60,000 being ordered with the Super Sport package in 1968. This package included the 396 engine, wider tires and 396 SS badging for the interior and body. Whatever this car may have lacked in horsepower it more than compensated for in styling and handling.
