One reason that the Camaro SS 396 was so far ahead of the pack was that it was one of the first cars at GM to be seriously tested in a wind tunnel. Its design provided excellent aerodynamic qualities and it featured tight, solid construction, even as a convertible. The Chevy Camaro SS 396 was a well-engineered, high-performance sports-racer that looked good and handled like a dream. Chevy engineers developed a four-barrel 396 big-block engine that produced 375-bhp at 5,600 rpm. With an amazing 11.0:1 compression, this 396 engine was offered as a dealer-installed option since GM had set a ceiling for cubic inches and horsepower in this size model. With plenty of power under the hood, the Camaro pumped up its styling with the popular SS package. This package included special options like a rear lip spoiler, the Super Scoop forced-air induction hood, and F70x14 tires, rally wheels, and power front disc brakes.
