Travel hacks for traveling with pets

Traveling with Fido can be a great time for you and your family, but if not done properly, it can also end in disaster. Traveling with pets is not quite the same as traveling with kids, as a lot of places won’t let you bring pets into their establishments. But if planned properly, a trip with Fido can be a great bonding experience for you and your pet. Here are a few travel hacks to help you plan a great trip with your pets.

Pack properly
It’s important to ensure that you pack everything that your pet is going to need. Be sure to pack plenty of food, treats, their favorite toys, a leash, food and water bowls, etc. Depending on where you’re traveling, it may be a good idea to bring your pet’s vaccination records to show proof that they have their rabies shots. Be sure to pack a pet carrier as well if your pet is used to staying in one.

Never leave your animal alone
Whether it’s warm or cold outside, it’s a poor idea to leave a dog along in a car. One of the biggest traveling with pets travel hack we can give is to make plans to always have someone in the car with the pet or take the pet inside with you. If the car is too hot the dog can overheat very quickly, so plan on taking them with you.

Exercise them
Prior to and while traveling with pets, it’s a good idea to exercise them. If they get a lot of their pent up energy out before getting into the car, they will behave better while on the road. Take them for a walk or play their favorite game in the backyard before hitting the road to ensure they sleep through most of the trip. This will also help ensure they don’t get too sick during the trip because they will want to rest.

Find dog friendly places
If you’re planning on traveling with pets, plan stops and hotel stays that are dog friendly. Stay at a dog friendly hotel, stop at attractions that will allow you to bring your dog inside, etc. Places like the Pioneer Auto Show that are dog friendly give you and your pet a chance to get out and stretch together and keeps them from having to stay in the car alone.

Traveling with your pet can be an enjoyable time and a great bonding experience for both of you. Travel hacks such as these help to ensure that you have a smooth trip and hit no snags. Just be sure to plan extensively before traveling with pets.
